VoIP (Voice Over IP) Explained by Costas Kariolis

Telephone calls through broadband: this is the future of telephony. Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology represents a revolution in how we communicate. Here?s a summary of three of the extremely common ways that VoIP may be used to make cheap telephone calls.

You?ve probably heard about new technology that enables people to use broadband to generate cheap calls. Perhaps you already call people or video-calls yourself from your computer. Whatever you know already, it helps to have a clear, basic grasp of how this exciting new generation of telephone services works and the way it can be used.

The technical name for making cheap phone calls using broadband is ?Voice Over Internet Protocol?. Some people refer to it as ?Voice Over IP?, and even ?VoIP? (say ?voyp?). Perhaps you?ve heard of ?VoIP phones?. VoIP is, basically, the umbrella term for that technology for making telephone calls using the Internet and broadband. It uses audio systems to encode speech in a fashion that means that it may be transmitted digitally over an Internet Protocol network.

There are numerous ways of using VoIP technology as well as a broadband link with make phone calls. Here are three of the very common.

1. PC to PC

The first, simplest and typically free method to use VoIP is ?PC to PC?. For this, you?ll have to be at your personal computer, as will the individual you?re calling. You?ll also both have to have a headset/microphone/speaker. And you?ll need either USB VoIP phone, which plugs into your pc?s USB socket. If you don?t have that, it is possible to install or download an item of software called a ?softphone?. This allows VoIP calling without dedicated equipment. Though this can be undoubtedly the cheapest way to generate VoIP calls, the decision quality is often not great. And you?re tied to your pc.

2. PC to Phone

The second popular approach to use voice over IP is by using your PC or computer to call a standard landline or cellphone. The advantage of this really is that the individual you?re calling doesn?t require signed up sticking with the same service, doesn?t need every one of the equipment etc. You, though, will likely be charged for these ?outage? calls. And you are, as above, associated with your PC.

3. Phone to Phone

A VoIP provider sends you a VoIP adaptor. You use this to get in touch your normal digital cordless (?DECT?) telephone for the broadband modem / router on your personal computer. Once you?ve installed the VoIP provider?s software (this converts the analog signal with a digital one), you keep using your phone just as before, making use of your existing broadband connection to generate cheap phone calls. To call, you select up your existing digital cordless (DECT) phone and dial as normal. Your computer doesn?t even must be switched on. When their phone rings with the other end, they answer as normal.

The beauty of this final method of using voice over IP is that your personal machine doesn?t even have to be started up for you to use the VoIP technology and broadband to produce calls. The person you?re calling doesn?t have to have enrolled to exactly the same VoIP provider. Nor do they require broadband, or perhaps at their computer. In fact, they don?t even must have a computer.

So there it can be ? three of the most common ways in which you are able to now use VoIP technology to create cheap messages or calls.
